Synchronous Weekend Online Tutoring Is HERE!

We at the Alan Siegel Writing Center are changing the way we make and conduct online appointments. Below you will find detailed instructions along with two videos that demonstrate how to make and attend an appointment.  Please read these instructions carefully if you have not used Tutortrac before.

Caution: Only our online schedule is available through this site; you can only make online appointments here for our online tutoring program. The online tutoring program only has hours on Friday night, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday evening. If you want an appointment that falls outside those time slots, you should make an appointment with us on campus. We are located at 524 W 59th Street, NY, NY 10019, Room 1.68. To make an appointment to see someone in person, you must visit the office or call us at 212-237-8569.

To access TutorTrac, you need to have an active John Jay email address.  You will log in using your email ID and password.  If you need to activate your John Jay email account or reset your password, please do so before you attempt to log in to TutorTrac.

Before you attempt to access TutorTrac, please view our videos on How to Make an Appointment and How to Attend an Appointment or read the instructions below.

After you have viewed the training video or read the instructions, you can access TutorTrac on the web by clicking here.

1.  You must schedule your appointment by 8AM Thursday morning before the weekend in question.

2.  You may only have one online appointment per day.

3.  You can only schedule an online appointment a month in advance.

4. You only have an hour for your appointment, so page limit matters.  Do not expect your tutor to be able to read long papers in one session. If you have a large paper, you must make multiple appointments.

1.   Log into TutorTrac using your John Jay email user name and password.

2.   Click on the appointment link on your main page.

3.   Choose Writing Center Online from the Center drop down list.

4.   Choose the class that your appointment is for. You can only choose courses that you are currently enrolled in, personal statements, and resumes.

5.   Enter the date on which you would like to have your appointment. You can also choose a specific time and tutor, but you will be shown more options if you leave these fields blank.

6.   Click on the search button. The available times will appear on the right side of the screen. If no times appear, there are no appointments for the day, time, and/or tutor that you chose.

7.   Click on the time slot that you wish to have. Make sure to check that you are on the correct date.

8.   Click on the save button to finalize your appointment.

9.   Click on the X to exit the appointment box screen and return to the previous page.

Once you have completed Step 9, you have scheduled an appointment. You can either log out of TutorTrac or try to make another appointment.

  1. You will receive an email with instructions from your tutor a few days before your appointment. Thus, you must have access to your John Jay email.  Please make sure that your account is accessible and functioning before you make your appointment. If your emails bounce back to the tutor on account of a full mailbox, your appointment will be cancelled.

  2. You must email your paper to your tutor an hour before the appointment.

  3. At the appointment time, you will meet with your tutor in Tutortrac LiveDocs.

  4. To access the program LiveDoc, you must log in to Tutortrac. Once logged in, click on your current appointment.

  5. In the lower right side of the appointment box, you will see a button that says, "Open LiveDoc Session".

  6. Click on this button and you will begin your session. The LiveDoc session will allow you and the tutor to see the same document with a few seconds delay.

  7. The screen that pops up should look like a word processing document.  If you have control of the document, you should see editing tools at the top and be able to type into the document.  To gain control of the document, you must click on the button that is at the top left that says, "Begin Editing."

  8. You or the tutor must post your paper in this box.  To post your paper, simply copy and paste it from your Word document into this window.  All formatting should remain.

  9. The changes that you make to this document will only update and be shown to your tutor if you click on the save button.  The save button can be found at the top left of the screen.

  10. You should also be careful to warn your tutor if you plan to take control of the session because changes do not automatically save.  If you click on "Begin Editing" before your tutor saves all of the changes that he/she made, all of these changes will be lost.

  11. During the session, you cannot share editing control at the same time as your tutor.  Either you have it or your tutor has it. There is also a chat box for communication, so you and the tutor can speak about the paper.

  12. We suggest that you and the tutor make changes to the documents using different color fonts so that changes are clearly seen and you know who has made them.

  13. Your session is recorded along with your chat log, so you should be able to reference it even after your appointment has ended.

  14.  If you cannot access Tutortrac because the program is not functioning, your tutor will meet you in Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, or Google Messenger. However, this will only happen if the program is not functioning.  Not having access to your email, user name, or password is not an excuse that will trigger this alternate format.  Your must use Tutortrac unless we are told that the program is down through official channels.

If you need to cancel an appointment, you must do so before the appointment begins.  Otherwise it counts as a missed appointment.

To cancel an appointment, log into TutorTrac and find the appointment listed that you want to cancel on the upcoming appointment list.  There should be a gray X at the end of your appointment information. Click on that X and you will receive a pop-up box that allows you to cancel your appointment.
