Criteria For Papers
(for
course requirements and a breakdown of each assignment's worth in your
semester grade, see here)
GENERAL
POLICIES
1)
LATENESS. Get to class on time. A late arrival
of five or more minutes counts as "late"; and
three "lates" constitute an absence. A late
arrival of 15 minutes or more will also count as an absence
2)
ATTENDANCE You are allowed two absences in the class
before receiving a failing grade. Given the generosity of that number
since we meet less than half as often as a face-to-face class, I will
make no exceptions.
BECAUSE
YOUR GRADE REFLECTS A SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE COURSE MATERIAL
(AND NOT WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE DONE), YOU CAN NOT MISS MORE THAN TWOCLASSES
FOR ANY REASON AND PASS THE CLASS.
GOOD REASON, BAD REASON, EXCUSED, UNEXCUSED, YOU CAN NOT HAVE MORE
THAN TWO ABSENCES AND RECEVE CREDIT FOR THIS COURSE. |
If you miss class, you must
send your assignment to me by the start of class time.
3)
Check your e-mail regularly. I use e-mail to get announcements
pertaining to the class out to everyone. Accordingly, it is your
responsibility to read any class related e-mail I distribute within
twenty-four hours of my having sent the e-mail. Weekends, however, you
will have forty-eight hours to do so.
Paper
Revising Policies
Any
student in the writing-intensive track may
rewrite a paper that grade on which will wipe out the grade on the first
version. You must, however, meet with a writing mentor at the writing
center to go over my comments and turn the new draft in within two weeks
of receiving my comments.
.
Reschedules
Every student
has the option once during the
semester to reschedule the due date of an assignment with the following
conditions: (A) you must notify me 7 days in advance
of the original due date of the assignment (B) you must do some portion
of the assignment. This required portion of a rescheduled assignment
and the new due date will vary by individual case. THERE WILL BE NO
CHANGES TO THESE CONDITIONS, EXCEPT AS NOTED ON THE SYLLABUS.
Students on the writing-intensive track can reschedule TWO assignments
(with the same conditions above).
The following items, however, can NOT be rescheduled: all quizzes, homework
1, homework 9, and the final paper.
NO EXCEPTIONS
LATE
PAPERS
Do
not tell me how the computer erased your paper. It is your responsibility
to set aside enough time to compensate for unforeseen events with printing
(and there often are), and to make back-up copies of your work (NOTE:
if you don't have a good strategy for backing up your work, please come
to me and I will help you out) If your paper is late, I
will deduct from your essay's grade according to the following schedule:

HERE
IS NO PRIVATE WRITING IN THIS CLASS.
You can expect that portions of your essays will be used in class. In
general, the students of this class will act as coaches and editors
for each other
CLASS
ETTIQUETE
Use of cell-phones—including texting— in class
shows disrespect for your classmates
and professor. YOU WILL INSTANTLY FAIL THIS COURSE IF YOU
USE YOUR CELL PHONE OR OTHER DEVICE DURING CLASS. NO
EXCEPTIONS.
YOU MAY NOT USE COMPUTERS, IPADS, OR OTHER DIGITAL DEVICES
IN CLASS WITHOUT PERMISSION; I encourage you to take notes on paper
instead
Eating and drinking are permitted in class unless doing
so proves to be disturbing to
your fellow students—and so I reserve the right to ban eating
and drinking either
temporarily or permanently at any time.
Private conversation and the exchanging of notes during
class interfere with your peers’
right to learn and so will result in a 1% penalty from your semester
grade for each
occurrence. If I need to remind you more than once in a class of this
policy, you will
also be considered absent for that day (which, accordingly, might trigger
associated
penalties. See attendance policies)
