BE
SURE TO FOLLOW THE FILE-NAMING CONVENTIONS FOR THIS COURSE (5% penalty
if you do not).
All files should be saved on your computer as: your last name, followed
by an underscore ("_"), followed by the first two letters
of your first name, followed by an underscore ("_"), followed
by the assignment number. So if a student named Saddam Hussein were
to submit assignment number 13, the file name would be:

Assigned Writing:
In 2000, many cultural critics observed the irony that the top rapper
was white and the top golfer was black. Given that golf is thought of
as a white sport and rap is thought of as black music, these accomplishments
by Eminem and Tiger Woods, respectively, made headlines across the country.
The subject of white authenticity in “the hood” and in hip
hop has always been a controversial one. Just as the question decades
ago the question was “Can a white man really sing the blues?,”
the one for you to consider is “Are 'wiggers' authentic?”
Frog is one example of a white character in The Wire that we can use to
further consider this issue. Some people might argue that his proximity
to “black life” in the Baltimore housing projects grants him
access. Based on the readings in Kitwana's chapter on the white identity
crisis, write a 500-600 word paper that addresses the
following question: Is Frog a wigger, wanksta, or wannabe? Explain your
position.
You must support your answer with textual evidence from Kitwana's article
(and others if you so choose) and dialogue from The Wire. YOUR
ESSAY MUST CONTAIN AT LEAST 8 CAREFULLY CHOSEN DIRECT QUOTATIONS; at least
4 of these must be from Kitwana's
article. Be
sure your quotations do not exceed 10 words. See
here on how to reduce quotations.
Be sure to organize your essay around a concise thesis.
UNDERLINE YOUR THESIS STATEMENT (points off if you
do not). Your thesis should appear with the first two paragraphs
of your essay.
