(exercises)

Exercise 2 of HW 2

Answer the following questions:

1) In a paragraph that adopts the claim/evidence/warrant format, answer the following question:

Look closely at the packaging of this chocolate bar (image here). How and why are its claims to be "authentically" Mayan accurate or inaccurate?

To answer this question, draw upon the following sources:

A) This chart detailing the exchange of food items between the Old and New Worlds in the wake of the Columbian encounter.

B) The first page of this scientific article about almonds

C) Keep in mind your answer to questions 5 & 6 from HW1.

WRITING REQUIREMENTS:

A) Place a (CL) before your claim, an (EV) before your evidence, and a (WA) before your warrant (5% off assignment if you do not).

B) Be sure to use evidence in the form of direct quotations. Your quotations should be no longer than 10 words; if you don't know how to reduce quotations, see here and here(both very useful). (5% off assignment if you do not).

C) Make sure your quotations are not standing on their own (see here to refresh your memory)

D) Do NOT worry about citations for the chart or the scientific article. We will get to citations later in the course.

2) The video When Worlds Collide argues the city of Potosi is an excellent example of the documentary's larger argument that "conquest" is not the best way to describe the encounter between the Spanish and the natives of the new world. With these concepts in mind, answer the following question:

According the video, why is Potosi (as opposed to any other city in the New World) such a good place to test whether or not  "conquest" is the best place to think about the Columbian encounter?  And how does Potosi demonstrate that "conquest" is an inaccurate way to think of the collision of cultures in the New World (according to the video)?

WRITING REQUIREMENTS:

Same as question (1) above plus you must use direct quotations from the video. To help you've out, here's a transcript for the documentary.

Hint:

Here's one way to organize this paragraph (although you do not need to follow it--also feel free to tweak it as necessary). The blank spaces are where you should put in your own words.

(cl) Potosi makes an excellent place to test whether or not the Spanish pushed aside native cultures because in Potosi__________________________. (ev) And what we find in Potosi is that______________________. Similarly, __________________________________. (Wa) If " conquest" were the best way to think of the interaction between Spanish and native cultures we would instead have expected to see____________________. But we don't, and so we can conclude that_________________________.

3)Thinking about the video as a whole, why might one agree with Garcilaso El Inka de la Vega's statement that the most important and lasting consequence of the Columbian encounter was not the wealth it brought nor the empire the Spanish built, but instead was the creation of Mestizo culture
