Before I Go To Sleep (Watson, 2011) is a novel that reflects a woman’s life after a tragic argument that led to violence and caused brain injury. Christine suffers from a brain injury that affected her hippocampus, needed for long-term memory. Christine awakes one morning in a room she had not recognized, and feels lost inside. Christine walks into the bathroom and does not see herself in the mirror, not knowing 20 years have gone by. Tears run down Christine’s face as she notices a man had been sleeping with her. Thoughts, memories, and fear are the only things Christine can concentrate on. Christine never tends to give up on life and fights throughout the novel to accomplish her needs.
During the novel Christine cannot recall any old memories. Christine does remember somethings, including her son’s name and her best friend’s name. Dr. Edward Nash, Christine’s doctor tries to repair her memory by doing memory techniques that might help her retrieve her old memories. Christine’s journal is a huge symbol to her because everyday she would record important actions and would re-read it the next day. Christine starts to feel fearful of the man she is living with, who claims he is her husband. Christine always finds this man lying to her. Christine gets confused but does not give up and continues to find the truth. Christine has some memory of her tragic accident while on vacation with this man, and realizes he has caused her life to overturn.
