In the nonfiction book Sybil Exposed, Nathan (2012) develops the concept of Multiple Personality disorder around the infamous character “Sybil” and her Psychiatrist Dr. Connie Wilbur. Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) is the theory of one person splitting into different personalities, which is now proven to be false and questionable today. Nathan presents the main characters Shirley Mason, Flora Schreiber, and Connie Wilbur in the early stages of their lives and throughout their adolescents. This background helps readers to have a better understanding as to why and what led to the Shirley Masons diagnosis of MPD and the creation of Sybil. Nathan gives proof through archival data and interviews that most of the facts behind Sybil were fabricated and enhanced for media purposes. A closer look into records would show that Dr. Wilbur’s psychiatry techniques were unethical and questionable. This is a story that stems from personal gain, vulnerability, subjectivity, and immoral motives. Shirley Mason’s timid character and need to please led to her essentially being taking advantage of and turned into a person or people she had to spend the rest of her life hiding from. Flora Schreiber comes along only to exploit Shirley Mason further and creates the “nonfiction” piece Sybil, which turns out to be more fiction than facts. After the release of the book and show Sybil, the three spend the rest of their lives battling with both external and internal conflict. With the popular rise of the concept of Multiple Personality Disorder, readers were left horrified with Dr. Wilbur’s unethical attachment and exploitation of “Sybil.” Many questions were left unanswered in which Nathan attempted to answer.
