An external viewer or a plug-in may be required to display certain files, notably, word processor documents, Adobe PDF files, spreadsheets, and postscript files. (This can be browser-dependent.) If you do not yet have an appropriate external (helper) application established, your browser will pop open an assistance box after you click on the document description. Use it to select the appropriate application on your computer. For example, if the format type listed in the assistance box is "application/excel", select the Excel application on your local computer.

These links will take you to sites from which you can download free viewers and plug-ins. To download a viewer or plug-in from one of the sites listed, click on the link to the site. In most cases, a dialog box will pop up on your screen to allow you to select the directory on your computer in which to save the viewer file. In some cases following the link will take you to a Web site on which several viewers are listed, and you will need to pick the appropriate one from the list.

For most viewers, after you download the file you will need to run it in order to install the application on your local computer:
