EXAMPLE OF CLAIM EVIDENCE WARRANTS

Claim:

What are you trying to demonstrate?

NYC squirrels are larger than suburban squirrels

Prof. Fritz favors vegetarians when grading.

Prof. Fritz must be involved in some illegal business.

Eating sugar makes you likely to commit fraud.

Evidence:

What proof do you have?

The average depth of squirrel footprint in NYC is 1/2 inch; in the suburbs the average is 1/10 inch.

Although vegetarians only represent 10% of the class, 40% of those people who received an A were vegetarians.

He recently bought a yacht, a sports car, and house in the Hamptons.

Right before he used someone else´s credit-card, Richard has a candy-bar.

Warrant:

Why do you think that your proof is relevant to your claim?

Since the heavier something is the deeper footprint it makes, that NYC footprints are deeper than suburban footprints tells us NYC squirrels are heavier.

If Fritz graded fairly, the number of vegetarians with As would be more in line with percentage in the class.

Because Fritz is a professor, and professors make very little money, the sums required for such lavish expenses must have been acquired illegally.

Because Richard broke the law after ingesting sugar, sugar clearly causes people to commit crimes.
