NOTE: THERE ARE EIGHT QUESTIONS!
Questions on City of Eros, pp. 119 - 142 (but skip pp. 135 - 138)
1. According to the author, what was particularly distinctive about the two distinct subcultures of prostitution in New York City in this era? Explain in your own words. (5 pts)
2. Compared to the geography of prostitution in the past in NYC, what was remarkable about the area bounded by the Bowery, Canal, Lauren, and Houston Streets? Explain in your own words. (5 pts)
3. Using pages 121 - 123, write a one to three-paragraph description (extra-credit possible for longer and better descriptions) of the nine blocks of Broadway above Canal St. at night time. This description should take the tone and approach of a guide to New York City's nightlife and demimonde as it might have appeared in 1850s. To help you out, I've given you've two pages from such a guide and an image from Police Gazette a popular and lurid magazine of the "sporting life" from the time. (15 pts)
4. Thinking of pp. 122 - 125, how did real estate, hotels, and prostitution intersect to the benefit of all three? Answer this question with two to four carefully written cl/ev/wa paragraphs.
Your paragraphs should argue a clear and concise claim that directly answers the question I asked.
Be sure your answer has at least (in total) five direct quotations supporting your claims.
(20 pts)
5. In the 1850s, was New York's district attorney eager or not eager to prosecute prostitution cases?
Answer this question with one or two carefully written cl/ev/wa paragraphs.
You should have at least three direct quotations
in total to support your argument.
At least one of these quotations must be from a primary source quoted by Gilfoyle, the author. Click here if you do not know what a primary source is.
Keep in mind that if Gilfoyle quotes another source and you quote that source rather than something Gilfoyle himself has said, you need to specify who the original speaker is. So, if Gilfoyle quotes Mathew Hale as saying "X," and you want to include that "X" quotation is in your paragraph, you need to identify the speaker as Hale and NOT Gilfoyle (since Gilfoyle was merely quoting Hale).
