A. October 8, 2014
4:15-5:30 pm Book Talk: Sex Work Politics
Samantha Majic, PhD, Assistant Professor, Dept of Political Science, John Jay College
In her book Sex Work Politics, Dr. Majic draws from research with the St. James Infirmary and the California Prostitutes Education Project to demonstrate how nonprofits negotiate their governmental obligations while advocating for their constituents. Challenging the popular notion that sex workers are universally “victims” who must be “rescued,” Dr. Majic shows how activists maintain effective advocacy and key social movement values and practices, even while partnering with government agencies.
B. October 22, 2014
4:15-5:30 pm Systems’ Responses to the Sex Industry
In this panel, researchers, non-profit workers, law enforcement personnel, and funders examine the official governmental systems and institutions that interact with the sex trade, discuss the current funding environment for systems responses, and envision alternatives.
If you attend this talk, you do NOT have to do the 500-word summary write up; you do, however, have to include details from the talk in your essay that week |
