LOCATION IN MUSEUM: FOURTH FLOOR (ASK GUARDS FOR "WALKER EVANS" EXHIBIT).
MOMA WEBPAGE ON EXHIBIT: HERE
Note: I will need proof you visited the museum but it may not be possible to get a receipt for your entry because CUNY students get free admission. SO BE SURE TO TAKE A PICTURE OF YOURSELF THAT VISIBLE INDICATES THAT YOU WERE AT THE MUSEUM
This is a small exhibitthat both requires and rewards close scrutiny of the photographs. What makes the photographs so interesting--and what will be required for the essay assignment--is apparent only after you spend time with them.
Evans made these images during the Great Depression in places as diverses Pennsylvania, Alabama, New York City and Havana, Cuba,
You will be using the visual evidence you see in the photographs to answer the following questions:
How can the evidence in the Walker Evans photographs be interpreted to demonstrate that there are or are not differences in American poverty during the Great Depression and now? |
HINTS:
1) photographs numbers17 - 37 will be the most useful to you.
2) Be sure to be SPECIFIC when presenting evidence from the images
3) Few, if any, of the details in the photos that will help you with the paper will be immediately obvious. You will need to look closely.
4) If you want to bring a friend who is not a CUNY student, consider going on a Friday night when the museum is free.
FINALLY: It's a small exhibit and so to make the trip to the museum worthwhile, you will want to set aside enough time to visit other exhibits at the museum, including perhaps this one or this one.
