HW20:

Topic Proposal

CAN THIS BE TURNED IN LATE?: no

DUE: 11/20 by blackboard by classtime

BE SURE TO FOLLOW THE FILE-NAMING CONVENTIONS FOR THIS COURSE (5% penalty if you do not).

All files should be saved on your computer as: your last name, followed by an underscore ("_"), followed by the first two letters of your first name, followed by an underscore ("_"), followed by the assignment number. So if a student named Saddam Hussein were to submit assignment number 20, the file name would be:

hussein_sa_20.doc

THIS IS ASSIGNMENT 20

Each member of the team should submit an identical document--this requirement is my way of knowing you are collaborating early in the project.

In this assignment, you are describing your topic in a one-page proposal.

This proposal should indicate:

A) The general topic (e.g. "the influence of video games on crime")

B) The research question you plan to answer (e.g. "What does scholarly research tell us about the influence of video games on crime?")

C) The objects of your study; that is, both the popular culture artifact you are going to analyze (e.g. video games) and the analytic lense you are going to choose. That is, how does your artifact illustrate what your analytic approach argues (e.g. Rafter on the Chicago School; Becket on crime, race, and the media)

D) How you are going to find your research materials. If doing a library search on a topic (e.g. "What does scholarly research tell us about the influence of video games on crime?") identify the search engine you plan to use and the search terms you plan to use within that search engine. If you do not know how to do this, contact John Jay's reference librarian.

E) Identify and explain the material you plan to use in the screencast (e.g. "excerpts from the video game Professor Fritz: Prophet of Doom" or "New York Times headlines from the columbine shooting")

F) How you plan to divide the labor; you can change this arrangement on Wednesday during your discussions on-line, but I want you to start thinking about it now.
