Question 3:

In this exercise, you will write a paragraph using claim/evidence/warrant that responds to the question below using the evidence we have provided. You will provide the appropriate CLAIM, introduce the quotation we have provided you as raw evidence, and write the appropriate WARRANT. Your claim should answer the question (see below) while your warrant should explain how and why the evidence is relevant to the claim.

(You can answer the question by filling out the chart or by writing a regular paragraph--but in either case you will need to a CLAIM, EVIDENCE, and WARRANT.)

QUESTION TO ANSWER:

How did Trujillo see the relationship between defining the borders of the Dominican Republic with Haiti (and who lived where) and Dominicans' sense of identity?

Raw evidence for you to use:

This a line from one of Trujillo's speeches in 1955 (as quoted in Austerlitz, Merengue: Domincan Music and Dominican Identity, 1997):

"I received in 1930. . . a people with a weak sense of identity, with their territory still undefined, and today I offer my fellow citizens a country the demarcation of whose frontiers have been completed."

demarcation: de·mar·ca·tion n
1. the process of deciding on and fixing land boundaries
2. the division of something so that its divided parts are separate and identifiable

Hints:

1) When including the quotation in the evidence, be sure not to use a "drop" quotation as discussed in page 2 of the explanatory material

2) Be sure your warrant does not simply repeat the claim but actually interprets and explains the evidence in a way that explains how it is relevant to your claim, as discussed in page 2 of the explanatory material

(hint: Be sure your warrant does not simply repeat the claim but actually interprets and explains the evidence in a way that explains how it is relevant to your claim, as discussed in page 3 of the explanatory material)

Question 4:

Using evidence from the paragraph below, finish the claim/evidence/warrant that has been started below. You will see that we have given you the claim. When presenting the evidence, use paraphrasing and smaller fragments (no more than 6 words) of the evidence paragraph -- just as the author did on this page of the explanation.

Evidence Paragraph:

In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson took control of the Haitian National Bank by sending in marines, who removed $500,000 of its reserves "for safe-keeping" in New York. The assassination of the Haitian president a year later finally prompted President Wilson to invade Haiti with the aim of protecting US assets and preventing the further strengthening of German influence in the region. After failing to make the new Haitian legislature adopt a constitution which would allow foreign land ownership, the Wilson administration forced the legislature to dissolve in 1917. It would not meet again until 1929.

complete this claim/evidence/warrant paragraph copying the the starter text (in italics) we've given you and using material from the above evidence paragraph:

Paragraph to finish:

(Claim) It is perhaps surprising that Haitians have so welcomed American soldiers after the earthquake because the United States has not always been a neighborly neighbor. For example, [insert evidence here] [insert warrant here]

Use this list to check your work on question 4 before we grade it:

A) Does your evidence consist of direct quotations of no more than 6 words combined with paraphrasing?

B) Do you have a warrant that explains how and why your evidence supports your claim?

Question 5:

How to get to Grove Encyclopedia of Music and Musicians on-line

1) Go to the John Jay homepage (www.jjay.cuny.edu)

2) Choose "library"

3) Choose "Databases A to Z"

4) Choose Grove Music; now known as the Oxford Music Online

Ethnomusicologists often refer to musical styles that combine forms from various parts of the globe as "creolized" music. Merengue, both Tipico and Orquesta, is often considered a creolized music that blends African and European elements.

Using evidence in the form of short, direct quotations from the Grove Encyclopedia of Music and Musicians (see box to the right), answer the following question with a detailed paragraph following the familiar cl/ev/wa format:

How can the evidence be interpreted to demonstrate that Merengue is a creolized musical form.

HINTS:

1) you will need to read and quote from several articles to write a complete response to this question. You will need to think of the relevant search terms to find the key articles in Oxford Music Online.

2) keep your quotations to 8 or fewer words; be sure to integrate the quotations into your own sentences

3) when citing the article, use this format: (Oxford Music Online, cf. "article title")

4) BE SURE TO PLACE A (CL) BEFORE YOUR CLAIM, AN (EV) BEFORE YOUR EVIDENCE, AND A (WA) BEFORE YOUR WARRANT.
