History 201: American Civilization I, From 1450 to 1865. A history of the United States. American Civilization I is a survey of American history from the European discovery of the Americas through the Civil War. The goal is to give the student an understanding of the basic facts in American history with emphasis on the events and trends that affected the lives of early Americans, and which contributed to the circumstances and position of the U.S. in the world today. We will accomplish this by combining a careful examination of the facts found in the main text with selected primary source material, and material found on the World Wide Web.

Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or above.

This course is dedicated to the memory of Marlyn del Carmen Garcia. A student in History 201 who perished in the attack on the World Trade Center on 11 September 2001.
